Below is a description of just some locations your
guide may take you
Rangitaiki river system
- This has a wide variety fishing, River fishing to lake and canal.
Very good fish in the trophy range can be found in this area. A
good location for targeting browns.
Tauranga-Taupo
river - This is a delightful stream, very clear
running over a shingle bed. Both glo bugs and naturals
can be very productive. In summer this river is
nice in the upper reaches Fish can be easily spotted
in the clear water but are easily spooked. This
river is suitable for those with some experience.
Tongariro River - At the southern
end of lake Taupo this is a world famous fishery attracting vistors
from all around the world each year. a large flow of water running
over a boulder base. This is believed to be the biggest Number
of spawning fish of any river in the world. I specialise in using
the local method of nymphing in the river. The river fishes well
from June to November when fish are running up the river to spawn.
Over the summer there is a great rise in the evenings. The lower
reaches offer fishing for browns over the summer. This is a Major
Rainbow fishery, browns also spawn up the Tongariro but are usually
only found early in the season. Suitable for beginner to expert.
Whanganui
and Whakapapa rivers - Both of these rivers
other exceptional nymph and dry flyfishing to good
sized brown and rainbow trout, best time to fish
is from October to June.
Puniu river
- Holds good sized rainbows and browns. Over farmland
there is good access to alot of fishable water.
Dry fly and nymph fishing.
Mangatutu
stream - Low banks allow good access and casting
room. A shingle base and very clear water. easy
to spook fish but great dry fly and nymph fishing.
Mohaka River
- A great brown trout fishery. Nymph and dry fly
to sited trout.
Waipunga
river - This is a small river, Holds good oportunities
for those wanting to site fish over the summer in
the upper reaches, Cicada patterns work well on
hot summer days. suitable only for experienced anglers
with good casting ability.
Lake Whakamaru
- Fish by boat around the weed beds for lively
rainbows and large browns. Best fishing November
through March. Great place for a beginner to learn
and great fun for those who want to catch a lot
of fish. Can be fished by nymph, streamer and most
summer days with the dry fly.
Lake Otamangakau
- Fish this remarkable lake. Fish boat or shore.
Very large fish in excess of 10Lbs are caught each
year. Both rainbow and Brown Trout are present,
best fishing is January through March.
Coromandel/Kaimai
Region - There are many beautifully scenic
streams and rivers throughout the Coromandel ranges
that hold both rainbow and brown trout, these are
particularly good for dry fly and nymph fishing
in the summer. Best fishing from October 1st through
march 31st. The rivers that I take trips to are
the Waitawheta river and Ohinemuri river,
These are set in very nice scenary and are suitable
for experienced and beginner anglers.
