Taupo and Rotorua Fly Fishing
Reports
|
Aug/Sep
Well all going well the rain may finally be over.
The amount of rain received in Aug was around 1.5 times the normal
amount. Things are looking good for September with the next ran
likely to bring a good run of trout up the rivers. Over the last
few years the spawning runs have peaked in September. This year
looks like it will be no different. I expect the fishing to be
good in the local rivers right through until Christmas. Size seems
to be down but still some great fish to be caught.

Mar/April
Mar was dominated for me by the World fly fishing
champs. A great result for NZ Team finishing in 2nd Place behind
the Czech republic. Individually I finished 21st overall. One
bad placing in the lake costing me a top ten finish. My best results
were on the rivers with a 1st place in the Whanganui river with
29 fish and a 2nd placing in the Waimakariri stream with 34 fish.

On the fishing front. Things have been great. There
are plenty of fish in most rivers and the settled weather that
keeps coming has been great for sight fishing. The low flows have
meant fish are a little wary but with a cautious approach are
definitely catchable..
Expect this good run of fishing to continue with
the odd early run of spawning trout coming through. There has
been a few in the Taupo rivers and in the Ngongotaha near Rotorua.
Most fishing is now with nymph. The odd fish will still come to
the dry. A couple pics from the last month.

Jan/Feb
Well it has been a very warm and dry summer so far
and looks like it will coninue. This has meant low flows in many
streams. Fish are still catchable and spring creaks have been
the best of these. The cool clear water not effecting the fish
too much. Looking forward. Expect some good dry fly action in
February especially on the cicada and other large dry flies. Below
a couple of happy January anglers.
Nov/Dec
We have had some great weather through November.
Some of the most settled spring weather I can remember. Catch
rates have been high and fish willing to take a well presented
fly. As the water levels are dropping fast accurate casting will
be come more important. Below a couple of nice fish caught and
released this November.
Aug
Aug been great for fishing on the local rivers.
Tauranga-Taupo and Tongaririo. Tongaririo has been fishing well
with globugs and cream caddis. Consistent rain has brought steady
runs of fish through the river.
What has been noticeable this year is that the size
of the trout seem to be smaller than previous years. No one is
quite sure why this may be. Maybe the later spawners will be a
little bigger. Great fishing anyway.
November/December
The last few weeks have been the wettest I can remember for some
time. Around Taupo the late runs seem to be over but things have
been good for those that don't mind catching a few mending fish.
Had one fun afternoon on the Tongariro fishing dries to these
fish. Backcountry rivers that have been running clean have fished
extremely well. This is where most of the action will be over
the coming months. The Rangitaiki river an old favourite has been
a little high but seems to be coming right. The numbers of fish
being caught on dries has been good. Try a blue dun or Irresistable
adams. For those keen on lakes. Worth trying Kuratau or the big
O. Both of these can be accessed from the shore. But for best
fishing use a boat. At this time of year try using midge and maybe
damsel, spider or hopper patterns.
